PhD student Uche Joshua Okoye from the Department of Biometry and Population Genetics at JLU Giessen is undertaking his lab exchange at the University of Queensland from September to December 2025. During his time at UQ he is working under the supervision of Prof. David Jordan, who leads the sorghum breeding and genetics programme at the Hermitage Research Facility in Warwick and is affiliated with the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI).
Joshua’s research focuses on applying breeding theory in sorghum through quantitative genetics and simulation approaches. During his visit, he is investigating approaches to optimise genetic gain and maintain diversity in the sorghum female pool, while improving male sterility management within the breeding program. He's enjoying the warm temperatures and sunshine in Queensland and seems to be slowly getting used to the pace of life at Hermitage!
